This stud is the same but 200mm long, the only difference is the threaded length will be longer on this stud even after it is cut down to size.
My biggest concern is strength, this is far from my area of expertise, it was a big leap for me to take the engine apart in the first place and its not going so well!

the tensile strength of the stud is 125,000 PSI. does that seem reasonable?
anything else I should consider when replacing this part?

Here's a long shot: http://www.arp-bolts.com

Perhaps if you contact their technical department with the dimensions of your original head stud, they might be able to source one, or at least provide some tensile strength data.

Good luck
J.

Have you tried David Silver Spares in the UK?  They have lots of discontinued parts.  The Ascot wasn't sold in Europe but a very similar model - with the same engine as the Vt500 - was sold there.  I think maybe it was a VT500E??

So I ended up going with the generic stud I found on amazon and it worked perfectly. Now if I can only solve my carburetor troubles  :'(
