Title: VT500C switch compatibility
Post by: 2fast2young on March 13, 2014, 02:33:41 pm
Quick question: Will VT500 C switches (specifically right side) fit onto the FT??

Thanks in Advance,

Elliot

I was asking the same question a few years ago.  I had wondered if it was possible to fit an older euro model 500C switch to the Ascot as the euro model had a light switch.  At least, the euro repair manual shows a light switch but I was never able to confirm if production models had a light switch or not.  In any case, I seem to recall the research I did suggested the right hand switch would not fit, or perhaps more accurately, it wasn't plug-n-play.  Doesn't mean you couldn't splice one in.

As I recall the Ascot's switch harness' plug into the junction box under the headlight.  Do the C models have the 'junction box?

I haven't tried them, but, I'm pretty sure the 83 & 84 Shadow & Ascot switches will interchange. The Shadow's wires might be a little longer than on the Ascot's though.

I know the 85 & 86 Shadow switches have different plugs as mentioned.

I'm in the process of swapping the wiring harness, gauge cluster, and round headlight from an 85 Shadow to an 83 Ascot.

Also the 85 & 86 Shadows have an electronic tach and a single ignition box.

I found a guy on another forum that is working on a Shadow. He sent me these two pictures of the Shadow's switch gear. I hope they answer your questions.

Good luck
J.

The UK e model had a on off switch for the lights, at least the early one did. I got a second hand switch some time ago, thinking I'd have a go at making it work but it's not something I've even looked closely at yet and possibly never will. Time will tell.

You might get lucky and it's plug-n-play.  On my 900F and 1100F the euro switch (RHS with the light switch) plugs right in and works.  Being able to douse the lights has helped me to limp home a few times on a low battery.

I can confirm the Shadow switch will work. Running on my 83 with no trouble, it was a plug and play operation!
