Title: Some Interesting Pics Of A Modified FT500...
Post by: J6G1Z on September 24, 2013, 12:59:07 pm
Here are some pics of an FT500 that has been modified for some serious racing. Unfortunately I don't know any of the technical aspects of the bike.

Anyway, here are the pics in no particular order.

That is a CBR600 F2 front end and wheel. I plan on doing something like that but the bike will be set up for flattrack and supermoto.

I believe that front end is an earlier generation. The first gen Hurricane front end has the same fork tube diameter & spacing to slide right up into the original Ascot triple clamps. The early Interceptor 500 front end will also fit, but the front wheel is 16" instead of the more desireable 17" wheel.

You could be right on the forks. I know the wheel is F2, Hurricane has 3 spokes, F2 has 5 and the rotor holes in the Hurricane have a different pattern to them.

FWIW, Hurricane tubes are 37mm and F2/3 tubes are 41mm.

I looked at the pics closer & even though it's supposed to be the same bike, there are two different sets of wheels on it. In the big pictures above, the wheels are black & have more than three spokes. In the picture of the bike in the turn, the wheels are red three spoke wheels. Hmmm...

I believe that the later generation CBR forks can be used, but you need to swap the triple clamps to make it happen. I think the stearing stem bearing sizes are the same, but I don't know if the stearing stem length will match the Ascot frames stearing stem height. You might have to swap stems in the triple clamps.

Sorry, I didnt look at the bike when it was red picture. Those would be Hurricane wheels. I looked around on the WERA board and those bikes were popular in the 90's, a handful of guys built some pretty nice track bikes. They liked the Hawk forks with Hurricane wheels front and rear. Funny stuff cause the Hawk guys all want F2/3 front ends, so why wouldnt the Ascot guys also want the F2/3? Anyway I am going to use F2 stuff cause I have a bunch left over when I upgraded to F3. I know where to find it if I need it, Honda used it for 7 years till the F4 came along.

IIRC wheels will fit from Hurricane to the latest F4 as the axle size are the same. If you are using a F4 wheel they will fit any F4 fork properly for the rotor spacing to go between the calipers. I am not sure the rotor spacing for (Im tired of typing Hurricane- lets just call it F1-) F1 and F2/3 are the same as F4, although you can "make it fit". Not in a sketchy way, but not a direct bolt on either. As for length, there is not a huge difference, like maybe 10 or 15mm, I would have to look back thru some of my crap I saved. If you tell me what you are trying to do maybe I can help figure out what you need. If you wanna keep it on the DL and not talk about it on the public side of your board PM me.
