Title: Battery question
Post by: mikeyboi83 on April 30, 2015, 09:39:05 pm
Will this battery work with my 1983 Ascot 500?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H7DSX2A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I know it is a little small and lower cca, but it would save me $60

Thanks

The stronger the battery the better .... the starting systems on these bikes are weak to begin with

So technically this one will work?

Not looking for long term, just something so I can practice on the bike, first one.

Once I'm on the road this summer I'll get a stronger one.

No, that battery, at 6 AH, does not have the capacity to run the electric starter motor for any length of time. You need a 14 AH battery. I got one at Walmart for about $50 a year ago.

Do yourself a favor & invest in a quality sealed AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery. I have a made in the USA AGM battery that I bought from Batteries Plus. I can't recall if this is year #5 or #6 on the same battery.

You should also consider picking up a Battery Tender Jr. if your bike sits over the winter.

What i ment by weak is there are problematic. ... a weak battery causes the pinion to get chewed up do to a lack of juice from the battery. and finding a new pinion is quiet difficult as they have been long discontinued and can be astronomical in price ..... in short you could more then likely buy a running or a parts bike for what it will cost to repair.

I could be wrong but any of the guys here might have some insight on it, but that's half the reason the XL or XR engine is sought after .... all that takes to fire up is to kick them over.
