John, the numbers don't add up: 4x128=512, so the max total will never be 1000. Can you change the settings to:
4 per post
max total size 1024KB
Max individual size 512KB (or at least 256KB)

Well... It took a while to find the right screen, but I think I've managed to reset the numbers to 256K per pic X 4 pics per post & a total of 1100K. Now somebody check it out & see if it works.

Works for me! ;D I've been on an SMF forum for a few years now, and I've seen a few changes in the sizes, so I've gathered an inkling into how it works.
Just for grins, try setting the max individual size to 512. This will allow 2 512KB pics or 4 256KB pics. Or, you could set the max individual size at 1024, which would allow 1 pic at that resolution per post, or two at 512, etc.
